Well humans also have very clear body language signals which humans as well as dogs can recognise and understand. Even when humans are speaking to each other, the actual words used are a very small component of the overall communication, with body language and tone of voice accounting for about 93% of the communication in some studies. So the fact that your dog doesn’t speak verbally, he is still excellently equipped to take instruction.

When it comes to exercising dominance over your dog, you want to use your body language and your tone of voice to maximum effect. Told you this was simple. Bad things: this means no shouting and obviously no physical violence. This sort of behaviour is sure to turn out badly.

Good things: this means being kind to your dog when (s)he does what you want them to do, or ‘positively reinforce’ their good behaviour as its known. This could be by giving them a small treat or even praise. Dogs respond wonderfully to simple praise, the kind you’d give to, say, a child.
